Dates Out and Nights In

Every new mom will probably agree with me on one big thing: as much as you love your drooly little monster, sometimes you just need a break! As Atti gets bigger and more independent, Mama has been able to spread her wings a little bit and get rid of some of the cabin fever that has been accumulating since the baby was born. I love my little bug more than life itself, but I have to remember that I am more than just a mom, I am a woman who needs some time with her friends and loved ones. So that is exactly what I've been doing!

Thanks to a handful of some very awesome women, I have been able to enjoy some wine on the patio (and the couch...and the kitchen...) and have some much need conversation and laughs. It is a breath of fresh air to have friends who know that I have a baby and help work around my needs and theirs to make sure that we can still have some girl time. The baby enjoys the fresh faces and my arms enjoy a break from carrying and bouncing her around.

Also, since the baby has been doing so well with company and traveling, Blade took the two of us out to a romantic date last night to the new Cleaver & Cork in PNL! We both got to get a little fancy and she was an absolute angel the entire time. She stayed awake long enough to get loved on by Andrew Olsen and friends that work there, and then fell asleep by the time our entrees showed up and stayed that way until we left. It was really nice to have a night out with my loves without any fussing or having to worry about feeding her every five minutes. This parenting thing may be starting to get a little easier!

These two make my heart melt. I am a very happy lady. <3

The Little Monster is getting bigger.

I can't believe it's only been three months and at the same time it seems to be flying by. Atticus is getting longer every day, still a teeny tiny thing though. She's still only fitting in some of the 0-3 month clothes and even some newborn stuff still, but she's growing out of things fast! Her little personality is starting to shine through- mornings are my favorite because she wakes up so happy and smiley, it melts my heart. I usually spend a good 30 minutes or so just rolling around with her in our bed making faces and flipping her back and forth. She is so strong- holds her head up doing baby push ups and constantly wants to be standing up, those little legs are always stiff. And we have gotten to the point where everything she touches has to be taste tested, including daddy's hands.

The best thing so far is that she has been learning to self-soothe by sucking her thumb, finger curled over the nose and everything. Besides being the most adorable thing I've ever seen, it's been a big help in getting her to sleep easier. She's going to bed around 9-9:30 every night and sleeping until about 1-2:00 without waking to feed, so Blade and I have gotten to sleep without the Bean in the bed for a while in the beginning of the night now. I forgot how great it is to sleep on my belly and not worry about crushing a child. I bring her into bed with us after that middle of the night feeding, more out of convenience than anything since she wakes up every 2 hours after that to eat again. Soon, fingers crossed, we can cut out a feeding or two and have a baby that really sleeps all night!

Being a mom has been the hardest and most rewarding thing I've ever done, for sure- but it's worth every second when I get that ear-to-ear grin first thing in the morning. She doesn't have another check up until next month, so I'll do a full update with weight then. Our big girl need to plump up a little bit, but other than that she is happy and healthy as can be!

Light Turkey Cobb

Light Turkey Cobb

One of my biggest issues with salads when dieting is that they always leave me hungry and unfulfilled. Thankfully there are ways to perk up your salad without adding a ton of calories- like this "cobb" salad remix that I've been making for lunch this week. Can't beat eating a filling meal that is under 250 calories and still packs in 18 grams of protein!

2 cups romaine
2 slices oven roasted turkey, diced
1 slice tomato, diced
1 hardboiled egg
1/8 cup bleu cheese crumbles
2 tbsp Lite Kraft Parmesan Asiago Balsamic dressing*

**There are definitely healthier options that this for dressing, but I can't live without flavor so I take the extra sugar and enjoy my lunch better

A PSA on PPD

The several months of pregnancy and the first weeks that follow birth are a blender that every woman involuntarily throws her emotions into. We know that we are a giant basket of crazy and tears, we know that our hormones are making our sanity teeter-totter, but we also know that it is a part of the ride and that eventually we will be normal again. Sometimes that doesn't happen on its own, and you can find yourself in a very scary and unknown place, mentally and emotionally. Dealing with the fact that you have a new body that needs to heal, a new sleep schedule that is never fulfilling, and learning how to manage this new lifestyle is more than enough for a person to have to bear without adding a newborn baby that depends on you for it's every need to survive (it is sometimes baffling that we want to have more than one child). The crying is nerve wracking and the diapers are gross, your body aches and you feel like you haven't slept since high school. But here is this beautiful little monster that you love unconditionally that makes it all worth it....right? But what if it doesn't?
No mother ever wants to admit that she isn't connecting with her child, especially when they know in their heart how much they love their little one, but it does happen. Knowing the early signs and symptoms of Postpartum Depression can help you stop it in it's tracks and move toward building happiness in your life before you get swallowed up. I didn't want to hold the baby, I was constantly sobbing, and I started to have this uncontrollable anger whenever the baby would cry. I had lost who I was and couldn't find my way back to being the partner and mother I knew that I was. I fought against putting a name to what I was feeling because to me it seemed like it was admitting defeat, like I had failed as a parent. In reality, recognizing that I had gone beyond 'baby blues' into a much darker and deeper depression makes me a smarter, stronger woman. All it took was one simple phone call to my OB and a short explanation that I can't find my happiness anymore and I don't feel right, and she sent a prescription straight to my pharmacy to pick up the next day.
I started Lexapro about 3 weeks ago and it feels like I'm living a completely different life. The baby is still a crazy little bug that cries and gets demanding, but instead of trying to avoid her, I want to spend every moment making her happy again. I have a whole new relationship with my daughter and my boyfriend, not to mention with myself- I smile now, I am happy now. And it doesn't matter if I have to take a little pill in the morning to make that happen, the important part is that I didn't let my pride override my health and I got the help that I needed.
Having a baby will turn your life upside down and will cause you to go a little crazy now and again, but you shouldn't ever feel out of control. Be realistic with yourself and your emotions, allow time to heal you naturally, and take the next step in getting professional help if you feel like you can't level out on your own. You'll be happy you did. Very happy.

Sunshine brings out the babes.

Living in the Midwest can be a real drag during the heavy parts of winter, but weeks like this one make it all worth it. It has been in the 70-72 degree range for almost a full week and Atticus and I have been taking full advantage of it. Since she has (literally) spent her entire almost three month life indoors, Mama packed up the stroller and introduced her to some sunshine.
On Tuesday, we went and met up with Tim and Sierra at Loose Park. She didn't really know how to deal with all the brightness, even with her adorable little hat keeping her face shaded. But she laughed and played on the blanket with the two of them until she started to get sleepy, at which point I turned our day out into an excuse to work out and walked her a complete lap around the park (which comes out to be about three miles). We went home and played some more and she slept like a champ afterward! I stayed out in the sunlight for a while, I even let the kitties in the yard for a little. Everyone deserves a little fresh air sometimes.

On Wednesday I took the little monster down to River Market and got some lunch with friends and then walked around for about an hour with Andrew Daley. Atti slept through most of the trip which was nice. We even went out later that evening to visit Daddy in the Caboose at Harry's and then to see Sierra at Char Bar to grab some food to go. She was a doll the whole time, poor girl got picked up and cuddled by just about everyone we walked by!

Thursday we went and got some lunch at Barrel so I could show her off to my coworkers and then we napped with the kitties with the windows open for a few long hours. Tiffany called and invited us out to dinner, so Atti got her first sushi date with the girls. Nara was the perfect spot to bring the baby- big booths, nice ambiance, and lots of color for the baby to enjoy. She even fell asleep on me toward the end and stayed passed out on the car ride home. It felt so good to be able to go out and not have to worry that someone else is having to watch her. Plus, I love spending time with my little munchkin, so I'd rather kill two birds with one stone and be able to tote her along with me!

I didn't realize how much being stuck indoors was putting a damper on my happy level, and how much fun I could have with my mini. She really enjoyed being out and about, and it definitely helped her sleep a little longer in the evening- poor thing was pooped from all the new sights and sounds. I'm getting more and more comfortable feeding in public and getting the hang of having a baby in tow. This summer is going to be fantastic, I can feel it!

Ham & Avocado Egg Cups

Thanks to a bouncy, bright-eyed baby girl at 7:00 this morning, and a sleepy boyfriend who is pretending to be her crib right now, I had some actual time to whip up some breakfast. I was looking on Pinterest for some ideas on what I should do with the avocados that are about to go bad, and found this awesome recipe. It's only three ingredients and takes 20 minutes to make a filling, protein packed breakfast!

Ham, Avocado, Egg Cups
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and rub some olive oil on a muffin tray (it doesn't matter how many you want to make, you can just make a couple or fill the whole tray). Put in one slice of ham, some cubed avocado- I only used 1/2 an avocado for 5 cups, and top with 1 egg each. Sprinkle on some salt and pepper and pop in the oven for 20 minutes! I ate two for a meal and topped them with some Chipotle Tabasco to add some zing. Nutritional info is per 1 egg cup.
